“If she’s making less money than me, she should blame her lawyer, her agent or herself,” Duchovny said. “She shouldn’t blame the fact that she’s a woman, or me. … Mulder has lost every fist fight he’s ever had on The X-Files. Scully has won almost every one. Gillian is 5’2”, I’m 6’; the odds are that I’d probably win more. However, because she’s a woman, Scully can’t lose. You become tyrannized by this notion that women must not only be treated equally, but they must never fail. It makes for bad drama.” On the salary issue, Anderson, reached by PEOPLE, backed her costar. “David is right. The issue here is equal pay for equal work.”
Duchovny told PEOPLE he stood by the interview, adding generously, “I want everybody to make as much money as possible.” “People,” August 1998

Also from that article (Entertainment Weekly, 4/2000):

“There will have to be some arrangements made to make the show survivable,” says Anderson, referring to the 70-hour weeks demanded of her and her costar.
Duchovny suggests that had X-Files creator Chris Carter developed other regulars into main characters, the pressure on them would be less. “It would have been great if Mitch Pileggi had been made into a third lead.” It might have given the series more longevity, he adds, “but no one’s used well on the show, aside from Gillian and I, and sometimes I don’t think I’m used well.” […] Although the lawsuit didn’t name Carter as a defendant, it has soured whatever friendship he and Duchovny had. “I think we’re both taking it personally,” says Duchovny, who confirms that they don’t talk much anymore. “His business is private and my lawsuit disrupted that.”

These were hard times in Duchovny-land, but….

And what of the girlfriend Duchovny reportedly demanded for Mulder this season? Carter won’t rule it out, but the actor denies he applied any pressure. “That’s all bulls—-,” Duchovny snaps. “I would like to expand into some kind of personal life, and an obvious way to do that is to have some kind of a love interest. But Chris gets scared and he puts it on my shoulders, like I’m a child asking him if I can go out with a girl. I’ve been asked that, and I bridle at that perception of myself — like I’m some kind of Frankenstein asking for a bride.” DD, Entertainment Weekly, 1995

David Duchovny says that just because he bitches and moans about working on The X-Files, it doesn’t mean he’ll be happy when the show ends. “Why does everybody think I’m this ungrateful person who is trying to leave the show?” he asked in a TV Guide interview. “I love the show. So when I talk about this ‘damn show,’ it’s like when you hear guys talk about their wives. They complain about them, but they still love them. They’re not going to leave — they just need to complain.”

I noticed you tagged a post with "rain scandal". Can you tell me what that is? Thanks!
Anonymous

Sure! Actually, after I posted it, I changed it to “rain fiasco.” (I just started tagging it, so there might be other relevant posts back in the archive…)

Basically it’s when David went on Conan O’Brien and made a joke about how much it rains in Vancouver. Then the local press made a fuss about it, and some random guy “banned” DD from a nightclub he’d never been to, and lots of Vancouverites got the idea that DD was this whiney American actor who came to their city but couldn’t handle the weather. This was also around the time when David was pushing to move the show to LA (which subsequently happened). So ever since then, there’s been a dark cloud (haaaa) hanging over the subject of David, Vancouver, and/or rain. It still comes up in press a lot.

You can’t help but question his enthusiasm for the X-Files film. “It was the television show that I was ready to leave. I wouldn’t go and do the TV show again. That would be serving the same apprenticeship.”
The pressure during that series was so immense that at one point he had to co-write an episode with the series’ creator, Chris Carter, with whom he was not even speaking at the time. There’s a tight pause. “It is possible that we didn’t talk during the writing of that script. I honestly don’t remember. None of that matters now.”
The Sunday Times, December 2007

I'm an awful fan because I feel I should know this, but could you explain the whole lawsuit with DD thing? Thanks!

First, relevant tags: lawsuit fallout and duchovny drama

Then: In August 1999 (in between seasons 6 and 7), David filed suit against FOX because of a syndication deal which he thought had cheated him out of millions in profit participation (they sold syndication rights at a cheap price to their own affiliate, FX). Although this shouldn’t have had anything to do directly with Chris, it basically came out that Chris had known about the deal and had been paid by FOX to keep it quiet. You can read the EW article here. David, at least, took it very personally and it caused a rift in their friendship for a while, although the suit was settled in David’s favor in 2001 and by 2002 they seemed to be getting along again. I have quotes about how they had to “work” on fixing their friendship — I’ll find and post.

“I wasn’t really that surprised at David’s interest [in appearing in the finale] because we had been in contact all year long. And any differences that we had [over Duchovny’s lawsuit] seemed to have been something we had both gotten past. I think David realized it was important to the future to participate in the present. The Mulder and Scully partnership was The X-Files for eight years. You can’t discount that.
“David and I had several meals at several different times after the settlement of the suit and worked things out. I still blame vertical integration as the big problem … it pits everybody against everybody and it was not good for working relationships. But I think David and I successfully buried the hatchet.”

“They said we will just shoot the pilot there and then move to LA. After the show was picked up they told me we will do at least the first year in Vancouver because it has the right look and it will be cheaper. We can make better shows and get better production value for the dollar up there. So we did the first year. Then they said we are going into syndication, which means working continuously for three years, after which we get to go where we want. It was tough and in the middle of the third year, my girlfriend and I did split up. After three years, they were saying that we will have five great years on television then we are all going to quit. So could I handle two more years in Vancouver? I didn’t have a girlfriend anymore so I had no reason to go to LA. So I said I can handle it because Vancouver is really nice.
“Going into the fifth year, I assumed we would shoot the sixth year in LA, and it looked like it was the first time they heard about it. What happened next was that the press was saying that David Duchovny, infantile, impetuous, whimsical, weight-throwing-around star imperiously makes production move to Los Angeles just because he wants to sit in a jacuzzi with his wife in Malibu. That’s the way things happened. Good story, no? It reads like a bad fairy tale. Why they kept it a secret is what I want to know.”
