Gillian Anderson’s top 30 memories of the series (2002):

28. Talking to David for the very first time outside the audition as he chatted up the girls and commenting on the fact that I was from N.Y. and not really meaning FROM FROM but the disappointment which flashed across his face when I qualified that I had only actually lived there a couple years. He moved on to someone else.

(I’ll be posting all their differing versions of this memory!)

What did you think of David Duchovny when you first met to make the pilot episode?
“We hit it off straight away. We almost fell into a rhythm while we were reading together and it felt really comfortable.”

Did you and David have instant chemistry?
“He came over to me in the hallway at the network audition and asked if we could read through the scene together. We did, and it was amazing. Better than anything that we’ve done since.”
- Gillian Anderson, Rolling Stone, May 1996

“I already knew I had the part, so I was totally loose,” says Duchovny with Mulder-esque sardonic humor. “This was my room, these were my people, this was my part. I was just fantastic. I wish I’d been that good when the cameras were rolling. So I played the scene in a kind of sarcastic way - much more sarcastic then it was written - and Gillian was just completely thrown by it. I was toying with this person, because Mulder doesn’t really care whether she stays or goes. And she was shocked that anybody would talk to her that way.” He smiles at the memory. “That’s exactly how she should have reacted. It was perfect.”

DD: When we were waiting to go in and read for the network, uh, I forget, did I come up to you? We just started running lines with one another before we went in there, so—
GA: You were trying to pick me up.
DD: [thrown] Was I?
GA: [laughing] I don’t know —
DD: Was I? Do you think I was?
GA: No, no, I didn’t say that!

DD: There was something even then that kind of brought us together, and then, when we were doing the show, it just, you know, no matter what kind of troubles we had as people off the show, or with one another off the show, it just never affected that. So time doesn’t affect it, either. It’s like nothing affects it. It’s weird.
GA: There have been times, you know, when we were in the midst of shooting the series where we were exhausted and fed up with ourselves, with each other—
DD: Didn’t talk to one another. The only time we talked to one another was as Mulder and Scully, you know, for weeks at a time.

First impression of David Duchovny:
“Very nice, very handsome, very smart, very charming. He was very good and attentive, and worked well on the scenes that we read together during the audition.”

The X-Files first started production in 1993, when you, David, were 33 and you, Gillian, 25. Do you remember meeting each other for the first time?
DUCHOVNY: Yeah. It was at the network reading for the pilot. There were two actors – me and another guy – and four or five girls. And just by chance I sat down next to Gillian and said, ‘Do you want to read through the lines?’ANDERSON: I remember it a little differently. The first time I met David was outside in the hallway at that reading, and he was quite charming and picking up all the girls passing by. [Both laugh.]
