fuck yeah david and gillian : documenting the awkward since 2010
The X-Files star David Duchovny told SCI FI Wire that he had a lunch reunion in Los Angeles recently with his co-star Gillian Anderson and series creator Chris Carter to discuss the long-gestating sequel movie.
“That was nice,” Duchovny said. “I see Chris quite a bit […] but I hadn’t seen Gillian in a while. So it was like a reunion. It really was. It was more emotional than I would have thought it was going to be. If you spend that much time with people and go through that much, there’s a lot of residual feeling.”

(A year ago, near the end of October. It seems to have been confirmed by a couple other sightings of GA in NYC at the time.)
Yes, we Twitter-stalk at this establishment. But we do it with science.
“We love each other now,” he says. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder. We actually had lunch last week, and it was really nice to be back together.”
DD, April 16, 2007
“I pick up my cell phone and it’s a very familiar voice I haven’t heard in over a year,” says Duchovny. “Gillian Anderson was in Los Angeles and she caught my movie [House of D]. She wanted to call to say she really loved it and that meant so much to me because the call was out of the blue. I haven’t spoken to her in over a year. We e-mail, but it was good to hear the voice of a friend.”
April 2005, Sun Times
Has she seen Duchovny since the show ended? “I was in LA recently and we had lunch,” she replies, curtly. How was it? “Very pleasant.” A pause and then some elaboration: “You see, we were essentially married. We saw each other more than either of us saw our partners. And it was like any relationship - it had its ups and downs.”

David: We had a very workable, working relationship. The reason I wanted to leave the show was because after eight years, it was enough…
Stern: I understand that. I didn’t say you left because of her.
David: Yeah, you did. I was out in the hallway when you said it.
Robin: Yeah, you did say it.
Stern: Are you really going to lie to me and tell me that Gillian Anderson is fun to work with?
David: That’s very well phrased. [all laughing] I like the way…
Stern: You liked her?
David: I like Gillian. You work with someone for so long and they become part of your life.
Robin: When was the last time you talked to her?
Stern: Yeah, be honest.
David: Well, honestly, I haven’t talked to her since I went back to do the last two episodes of the show this year. We haven’t spoken since the last day.
Stern: So, don’t you think that’s curious, that someone you work with for 8 years—
Robin: Who is a part of your life…
Stern: Who is a part of your life… Why wouldn’t you call her?
David: I treat all my family like that.

Anderson says: “We’d seen each other in between and we did a week of rehearsals in LA before David started, so we got an opportunity to gauge where we were at. Fortunately, that dynamic was still alive, so that when we started shooting again, it showed up when we showed up.”
Duchovny laughs and says: “We couldn’t keep our hands off each other.”

There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web...
CableFAX: “And you just did another X-Files movie in 2008. Do you and David Duchovny keep in touch during the down times?”
Anderson: “Oh yeah.”
CableFAX: “Great. I’m going to start a campaign to get you a guest spot on ‘Californication.’”
Anderson: “OK, please do because we’re actually doing a question-and-answer thing tomorrow at a charity event, and that’s one of the questions I have: ‘Why haven’t they offered me a guest spot on Californication?’”
Anderson: “It’s a no brainer! How funny would that be to be a completely, completely different character.”
CableFAX: “Right. It can’t be anything like Scully.”
Anderson: “And it has to be sexual - because how weird would that be? It would just be weird to see this person who was Scully, and anyway… we’ll start the campaign.”
When was the last time you saw Gillian Anderson prior to shooting the film?
“It had been a number of years, but when you spend that much time with someone it doesn’t feel like you’ve been apart. She’s like my sister.”
David Duchovny, 2008
Was it easy to slip back into that same chemistry between your characters in the film?
DD: It kind of was. And I think probably because we had so little contact. There was an element of missing one another working together that I think was at play early on in the shooting… and to just trust that it would be there, trust that whatever used to work was going to continue to work. You know we never really worked on it before. It’s hard to work on chemistry. It’s either there or it isn’t. Like trying to fall in love with somebody, you know, you can try…
What do you love about working with Gillian?
DD: Well, I don’t know, that’s the thing. It’s just like one of those things that works.

Do you keep in touch over e-mail?
Duchovny: A little bit, yeah.
Anderson: A little bit of texting, a little bit of BlackBerry action.
NYMag, November 2010 (opening night of David’s play)
“A couple times, I’ve looked over and gone, ‘Oh, wow! That’s Mulder standing next to me!’”
She and Duchovny stayed in touch via e-mail since the series ended, but their first chance to catch up in person was a lunch just after the movie was becoming a reality. “It was the first time I’d seen David in ages,” she recalls. “It’s emotional. We have a lot of history. I spent more time with David than I have with most of my friends and some family members.”
TV Guide, 2008
Happiest of New Years! In case you're worried about things to post, how about an Unofficial Timeline of the Awkward? I know I'd appreciate someone else doing the math on how often, and how, and when, GA and DD communicated between the end of XF and the start of filming on XF2. As is my current understanding, they didn't see each other, except when they did, and maybe it was only twice a year, or not twice a year, but there was also Blackberry Action. Not that we'll ever really know. . .Anonymous
Can we get married? This is a fantastic idea. I have thought about it many times. I will definitely draw up a Timeline of the Awkward for you all which will incorporate all the evidence at our disposal!
“We haven’t really kept in touch. She moved to London, so we were in email touch a little bit. But I’ve only seen her since 2002 probably two or three times. I didn’t understand what she said. She has an English accent now. No, I am just kidding. It was a highlight for me to work with her again. The first scene was just great. We immediately felt there was still a connection.”

To celebrate 1000 followers (!!) and because you asked, here is my Timeline of Awkward, composed of my stalk reports.
Some of you may be confused about how much David and Gillian have been in contact since the end of the series, due to numerous conflicting reports. I suggest you consult the tag “incommunicado” to see for yourself that there is no agreement here among our sources. So we must proceed to set out all the information available and see if we can draw a general interpretive schema.
First off, the “post series” tag covers all content that happened after the finale in May 2002 and up to the present. With a more narrow focus, “intertestamental period” is the name of the tag for the period between 2002-2008, or post-series to filming of XF2. However, neither tag includes XF2 stuff, just because it was too much to re-tag. “XF2” just has its own tag. But there is some overlap and there might be stuff left untagged, because my tag system has gotten more complex since I started this. Not to mention that I’ve barely skimmed the amount of XF2-era stuff that I have to post.
Now: let me lay out a basic timeline.
late April - Filming wraps, wrap party (
DD not attending he WAS there! just not doing press.)
May 5 - 200th episode party (both attending, cake-feeding).
July - David says, on Howard Stern, that he hasn’t seen Gillian since “the last day” of filming, showing his first signs of memory loss. link
November - Gillian’s first play begins; by this point she has at least part-time residence in London.
March - Gillian says they had a “very pleasant” lunch in LA “recently.” link
April - Gillian calls David to tell him she saw House of D; he says he hadn’t heard her voice in “over a year.” link
April 16 - David says that they (with CC) had lunch “last week.” This lunch gets talked about quite a bit:
April 26 - Gillian posts a message (or as Jose Chung might say, a manifesto) about her relationship with TXF and David on her website. link
October 26 - The IWTB script readthrough, “the first day they’d been in a room together [with CC and FS] in five years.” Chris cries, it feels awkward at points, David and Gillian get “giggly” and “childish.” link
November - “A week later” (after the readthrough), according to Frank Spotnitz, they did camera tests, ad-libbing in character (those “what did you miss” viral videos). Then according to Gillian, they do “a week of rehearsals in LA” before David starts filming. Is this the same thing, or something else? link
XF2 is filmed and released; they talk a lot about how they didn’t see much of each other because they were tired of each other (see incommunicado). They go on and on about how during the series they spent more time together than married brothers and sisters (or something). They also claim to email. But on a couple occasions they admit:
IWTB starts filming (with DD) on Dec 10th, 2007. After Christmas they both start in early January and film until March 12. Wondercon was Feb 23. Then they don’t see each other again (we assume) until mid or late July, when they begin press junkets before the premiere (July 23). After the premiere in London and doing press there the first few days of August, they both go home.
October 26 - Twitter sightings have them eating dinner together with Tea (and probably Mark) in NYC. link
July 11 - Evan Handler tweets to a weirdo fan that Gillian “visits the set” [of Californication] and that David and Gillian “are friends.” link So, some time prior to July 2012, Gillian has visited the Californication set at least once.
August 8 - “News” breaks on tons of gossip sites that David and Gillian are “in love and living together.” link David denies it on August 17th, when he also shares that he and Gillian have been emailing and joking with each other about the rumor. The tag “shackin up” enters our lives.
So there you have it. There might be a few gaps, because I swear I remember reading interviews that mentioned them having lunch more than once. I found the article from 2004, but if there was another instance, I haven’t found the record of it.
But in short: It’s true that they didn’t see each other at all from early 2004 to April 2007 — more than three years. But in the middle of that gap, they talked on the phone. They also sent mysterious emails, containing god knows what kinds of personal details or terrible transgressions of capitalization conventions. On what occasions did they send these emails, and for what purpose? We may never know. Now we are supposed to believe that they meet up “twice a year,” something that sounds a little sentimentally optimistic to me — although since XF2 they have managed to meet up about once a year (that we know of), which is pretty decent. And they text each other, which I find easier to imagine than the emails.
