Earlier this year the tabloids suggested that you and Gillian don’t get on because you had a fling together when the series first started.
“Well. [Chuckles] That’s a good theory. That shows more imagination than the recent one. At least that shows some storytelling. Some back story. That was a good one, yeah.”

TRAVERS: It’s a very special relationship, that was kind of unique in television at the time when it started. I watched the Pilot again recently -DUCHOVNY: Oh, God.PT: No, it’s great!DD: Not that the Pilot is bad, but -PT: You’re both babies! There’s such an innocence -DD: Not only babies, but we stink. I mean, I look at it, and I think - I mean, I taught myself how to act on that show…

“I already knew I had the part, so I was totally loose,” says Duchovny with Mulder-esque sardonic humor. “This was my room, these were my people, this was my part. I was just fantastic. I wish I’d been that good when the cameras were rolling. So I played the scene in a kind of sarcastic way - much more sarcastic then it was written - and Gillian was just completely thrown by it. I was toying with this person, because Mulder doesn’t really care whether she stays or goes. And she was shocked that anybody would talk to her that way.” He smiles at the memory. “That’s exactly how she should have reacted. It was perfect.”

Agent Mulder, I am standing out here in the rain and the mud, looking at two graves in some cemetery, looking at two graves in some cemetery that we dug up, where we dug up someone, some thing…where we dug up something, somebody, something that I can’t explain—I’m gonna start from the top…Agent Miles—Agent Mulder, I am standing out here looking at two coffins…Agent Mulder, I am standing out here in the rain, and the mud, and the rain…and the force summoned Theresa Nevin’s, Nemman’s body…and the force, and Theresa Nemman’s…and the force summoned Theresa Nemman’s body into the woods tonight!

DD: I have these very selective, kind of weird, very vivid memories that make no sense of that time… flashes of certain things that aren’t significant, like that. Do you have any memories that stand out? Like if I were to say give me five memories from the Vancouver years— being on set— just the first thing that comes to mind. […]
GA: Um… Well, the —
DD: The rain.
GA: —scene in the Pilot, with the rain.
DD: The rain.
GA: Yeah, is that a big one for you, too? Oh my god, the rain. My lips wouldn’t move! I was so cold!
DD: You were adorable.

That she and Duchovny did not get along is well known. “We were friends during the pilot,” she says. Then seems to think better of such a blunt statement and adds, “In a different way than we were through the rest of the show.”
Was there antipathy or just distance? “To be honest, a bit of both… yeah.”

Then an unknown actress, Gillian was being wined and dined at a restaurant by a boyfriend she had been dating in Los Angeles for several months. “Suddenly he asked me to marry him,” Gillian recalls, ”and he presented me with a ring while the waiters and other diners looked on.
“I should have said no. I didn’t want to marry him. But how could I, when every was watching me and willing me to accept? So I said yes, but it was stupid because, looking back, I was simply accepting the marriage proposal just to please the waiters.
“It was only when I went to Vancouver to film The X Files that I realized it was all a mistake. It was the first time I’d been away from him and could think clearly. I realised I wasn’t meant to be this man’s wife and I put a stop to any wedding.”
