The Timeline of Awkward: 2002 to 2012

To celebrate 1000 followers (!!) and because you asked, here is my Timeline of Awkward, composed of my stalk reports.

Some of you may be confused about how much David and Gillian have been in contact since the end of the series, due to numerous conflicting reports. I suggest you consult the tag “incommunicado” to see for yourself that there is no agreement here among our sources. So we must proceed to set out all the information available and see if we can draw a general interpretive schema.

First off, the “post series” tag covers all content that happened after the finale in May 2002 and up to the present. With a more narrow focus, “intertestamental period” is the name of the tag for the period between 2002-2008, or post-series to filming of XF2. However, neither tag includes XF2 stuff, just because it was too much to re-tag. “XF2” just has its own tag. But there is some overlap and there might be stuff left untagged, because my tag system has gotten more complex since I started this. Not to mention that I’ve barely skimmed the amount of XF2-era stuff that I have to post.

Now: let me lay out a basic timeline.

2002

late April - Filming wraps, wrap party (DD not attending he WAS there! just not doing press.) 

May 5 - 200th episode party (both attending, cake-feeding). 

July - David says, on Howard Stern, that he hasn’t seen Gillian since “the last day” of filming, showing his first signs of memory loss. link

November - Gillian’s first play begins; by this point she has at least part-time residence in London.

2004

March - Gillian says they had a “very pleasant” lunch in LA “recently.” link

2005

April - Gillian calls David to tell him she saw House of D; he says he hadn’t heard her voice in “over a year.” link

2007

April 16 - David says that they (with CC) had lunch “last week.” This lunch gets talked about quite a bit:

• …“We love each other now,” he says. “Absence makes the heart grow fonder. We actually had lunch last week, and it was really nice to be back together.”… link
• …a lunch just after the movie was becoming a reality. “It was the first time I’d seen David in ages,” she recalls. “It’s emotional. We have a lot of history. I spent more time with David than I have with most of my friends and some family members.”… link
• …“That was nice,” Duchovny said. “I see Chris quite a bit […] but I hadn’t seen Gillian in a while. So it was like a reunion. It really was. It was more emotional than I would have thought it was going to be. If you spend that much time with people and go through that much, there’s a lot of residual feeling.”… link

April 26 - Gillian posts a message (or as Jose Chung might say, a manifesto) about her relationship with TXF and David on her website. link

October 26 - The IWTB script readthrough, “the first day they’d been in a room together [with CC and FS] in five years.” Chris cries, it feels awkward at points, David and Gillian get “giggly” and “childish.” link

November - “A week later” (after the readthrough), according to Frank Spotnitz, they did camera tests, ad-libbing in character (those “what did you miss” viral videos). Then according to Gillian, they do “a week of rehearsals in LA” before David starts filming. Is this the same thing, or something else? link

2008

XF2 is filmed and released; they talk a lot about how they didn’t see much of each other because they were tired of each other (see incommunicado). They go on and on about how during the series they spent more time together than married brothers and sisters (or something). They also claim to email. But on a couple occasions they admit:

• DD: “We were in email touch a bit. But I’ve only seen her since 2002 probably two or three times.” link
• GA: “We emailed each other from time to time, or sometimes we—” [DD cuts her off BUT I REMAIN CERTAIN that she MEANT to mention the times they had lunch/talked on the phone]

IWTB starts filming (with DD) on Dec 10th, 2007. After Christmas they both start in early January and film until March 12. Wondercon was Feb 23. Then they don’t see each other again (we assume) until mid or late July, when they begin press junkets before the premiere (July 23). After the premiere in London and doing press there the first few days of August, they both go home.

2009

October 26 - Twitter sightings have them eating dinner together with Tea (and probably Mark) in NYC. link

2010

November - Gillian attends David’s play on opening night. They admit to seeing each other “twice a year” and to texting. link

2011

July 30 - The IBG meetup. As David leaves, he (seems to) tell Gillian to “come by ___ if you want,”  the blank being either (a) The Parlor or (b) the party (the Californication wrap party?).

2012

July 11 - Evan Handler tweets to a weirdo fan that Gillian “visits the set” [of Californication] and that David and Gillian “are friends.” link So, some time prior to July 2012, Gillian has visited the Californication set at least once.

August 8 - “News” breaks on tons of gossip sites that David and Gillian are “in love and living together.” link David denies it on August 17th, when he also shares that he and Gillian have been emailing and joking with each other about the rumor. The tag “shackin up” enters our lives.

So there you have it. There might be a few gaps, because I swear I remember reading interviews that mentioned them having lunch more than once. I found the article from 2004, but if there was another instance, I haven’t found the record of it.

But in short: It’s true that they didn’t see each other at all from early 2004 to April 2007 — more than three years. But in the middle of that gap, they talked on the phone. They also sent mysterious emails, containing god knows what kinds of personal details or terrible transgressions of capitalization conventions. On what occasions did they send these emails, and for what purpose? We may never know. Now we are supposed to believe that they meet up “twice a year,” something that sounds a little sentimentally optimistic to me — although since XF2 they have managed to meet up about once a year (that we know of), which is pretty decent. And they text each other, which I find easier to imagine than the emails.
