a little off

“David and I are both a little off. We’re both difficult to get along with. We spend so much time on the set together that we don’t have anything left to say to each other outside of work. David and I understand each other enough to know that we have to keep our distance. You couldn’t ask for much more from two personalities as different as ours.

“We don’t socialize, we never have. A long time ago we developed a work ethic whereby we give all our energy to our characters. When the take is finished, we walk in opposite directions.

“David helped me a lot at the beginning of the series when I wasn’t that experienced, and I will always be grateful to him for that. Would it have been nice if we’d been closer off the set? Maybe. Does either of us worry about why we aren’t friends, or why we don’t get along on a personal level? No. There’s nothing more to be said on the matter.”

DUCHVONY: You know, in a weird way it felt like absolutely no time had passed because we were in Vancouver. It just seemed like we’d come back from summer hiatus or something, which was kind of terrifying sometimes to think about. But for me, in terms of getting back into the character, it really was when I started working with Gillian that I started to discover Mulder again, for real, instead of kind of faking it.ANDERSON: The first couple of days… I felt like I had nothing to grab onto, that I kept trying to hang my coat on something that felt familiar, and there wasn’t. It felt really odd. And it wasn’t until day three, when we got to work together, that I was kind of like, ‘Oh, I forgot. This is what it is.’DUCHOVNY: It was a real relief.Deadbolt, 2008

How do you assess David’s appeal?“Obviously, the audience is only seeing his character, who’s incredibly intelligent, kind, charming, sensitive. He’s like the perfect romantic hero. And a lot of that is also David. He brings such a warmth and intelligence to the role and a smooth sexuality that I don’t think anybody in their right mind could not find him attractive.”

“It’s almost like going back to a relationship you thought was over, so it’s a little queasy at first,” said Duchovny. “But what got me over that hesitation was the first scene I did with Gillian. Everything kind of clicked and that’s when it really felt like, okay, this is The X-Files, this is Mulder and Scully.”

Gillian: It felt incredibly natural. Just kind of looking across the room at each other, and going, “Hey, you’re— ! Hi!”David: It was nice to just wear the clothes again, you know, just be the character again. Just being in a scene with Gillian again got my memory going to the right place.

Anderson: Any thoughts on the end of the show?
Duchovny: We’ll do another movie, at least, so I don’t think it’ll actually end. There’ll be an ending image, but by the sheer fact that it’s a self-conscious ending image, I think it’ll be overloaded and won’t work. My favorite image of the show’s seven years is the end of the black-and-white episode, where they had us slow-motion dancing. However it ends, to me, that’s my favorite.

Chris on David and Gillian in 2008:

“It’s always magical to see them, because it’s almost as if time stops for them. When they look at each other, it’s like they share something that only they know. It’s like they share a secret.

“Whenever I see that, whenever I see them embrace and look at each other, the smiles are— there’s not a moment’s falseness. There’s a true warmth between them.

“We’ve all had our difficulties and we’ve all had our problems, and as it is a family, it can be a dysfunctional family. When I see them come back together it’s always the same chemistry as Mulder and Scully.”

Did the chemistry return right away with David?
Well, the chemistry with David is completely easy. It is something that we seem to do, to slip into with our eyes closed. From the second we started working together, it was there. There was one point when we were in a scene and I looked to David - Mulder - in the way Scully would naturally look to him for some mutual understanding abut something that was being discussed - and it was so familiar. When I recognised who was in front of me, it was almost shocking in a way. There’s a lot of deja vu. It took a good many hours to acknowledge the fact that “here we are again,” finally and wonderfully. We are both enjoying it so much.M2 magazine, 2008

Gillian Anderson … reprises her role as Special Agent Dana Scully in [the Playstation XF game].
It was “extremely difficult” to get back into character, she tells us. “I was working on a play and very much immersed in the rehearsal process for this other character. I kept saying things like this character would, and not like Scully. So it was very frustrating. I think if I was standing next to David and could hear his voice it might’ve made it easier.”GA, April 2004, Playstation Magazine

DW: So what is the reality of this new season [9] without David?
It’s a real pleasure working with [the new actors], but on the other hand David is not here, and there was something that we shared as actors and characters that cannot be reproduced. Not that anybody is trying to reproduce it, but it’s just not the same.
There was an energy between us that was very powerful and very profound. I miss that and Scully misses that. When we were taping the first and second episodes this year I think I referred to Doggett as Mulder by accident, which I had done way at the beginning with him. It was like there’s some part of me that is still in that rhythm, expecting that familiarity. GA, Dreamwatch, Jan 2002
